Picture turned out weird but Captain's got a black void inside him which will apparently kill you if you touch it. Any idea what it might be? Or why the image is distorted? I just know you're on several international wanted lists for dabbling in forbidden arts.
[Attached: a photo of the captain's weird head wound, except it's all distorted like a creepypasta.]
[It is 6am and you better believe he did not sleep a wink that entire last night yet again and wow this accusation sure is--!]
Well, perhaps you'll be reassured to know! They don't put you on a wanted list when you place the ban on the forbidden arte yourself 😊
[Is he joking? Is he serious??? A mystery this shall remain. Sometimes the best way to conceal the truth is by saying it outright in the most ridiculous framing possible......or maybe he really is just very tired, and his personal filter has become very frayed. Maybe a bit of both--]
At any rate, I did see that happen. But only from a distance. I want to thank you for sending the picture, though I also can't help but wonder if your first instinct's usually taking pictures of such things as this...?
No matter. That's the real question of the hour. Even at a distance it looked like an absolute darkness in there...my first thought is an immensely dense well of first fonons, but. At such an intensity I feel I should have been able to hear such a thing even across the room, if not at least sense it. I did not.
[After this the typing animation lingers for awhile, on and off, as he peers at the picture attached and tries to gather his thoughts accordingly. Hm, but the pieces to work with here...he's a fonologist, really, not a mechanic. Jade sure has been rather keenly feeling the limitations on the scope of his field here, of late...]
It's difficult to form hypotheses as to why the image is distorted like this without a familiarity of how such images are taken. I don't suppose you're more familiar with the mechanics of this "camera" tool in these phones?
If I had to form a guess off the cuff, though, the image capture may involve refraction of light in some way. If this is so, that void could easily be greatly affecting it, maybe...either by absorbing it, or emitting an energy disrupting it. Perhaps both.
My first instinct is to do what it takes to get information.
The camera focuses light and records the image with sensors. I don't really know how to explain the details. So it makes sense the captain disrupts it. But I have no idea what distorts light like this, or messes with the sensors.
I do so enjoy winning at forbidden artes, it's true! Because those are things that can be won, as we all know. [Read: they are not......and besides, the real irony here is at the ban did nothing to actually deter the people it needed to anyway, but. Let's not talk about that--]
Hm, detail enough for now. It can be reasonably assumed he's putting out some sort of interfering energy...that, at least, makes sense. It would be proportionate enough to the kind of power he's so clearly able to exert on a frequent basis, upon our surroundings.
What was it like in person? Yourself and Clarke were the closest in initial proximity. [Well, before Skulduggery started dipping his fingers in it, anyway....] Any sensation upon your own eyes, looking at it directly? ...And is her hand alright? [It occurs to him that the chances of her maybe getting some of that void on her fingers might not have been zero, actually...]
Small blessing there, at least. That was remarkably reckless of her.
[Though it did end up yielding rather more fruit than anybody expected, in one sense. Hm, hm...]
Looking directly upon Rem burns on account of the amount and intensity of ultraviolet radiation it exerts. The retinas within a pair of eyes are flooded and damaged, trying to process it. For a void to do the same sort of thing...either it's exerting something very similar, or perhaps performing an inversion. A darkness that complete means there's no light at all emitting or reflecting from it, after all.
...In fact, it could be actively absorbing all light. A field that absorbs could be just as disruptive...and painful to look upon too, perhaps. Eyes do rely a great deal on light emitted, in that fashion. If there's an actual vacuum in that area... [Another long pause, though no typing animation couples with it at all for a bit.] I wonder if it's just light. I wonder what else it might be absorbing?
Even if it absorbs stuff, how can you test it? Stab him again and scream into the void to see if it absorbs sound? Try to shove the weapon inside until it disappears?
Well, if we ever do stab him once more with such success, testing the substance in such a fashion wouldn't be a bad idea! 😊 [Sorry, Natsuno, was that an attempt at being sarcastic? Well! Jade's particular brand of not-quite-sarcastic far-too-enthused cheer may be emerging even through text, about now....] Those lobster crackers didn't seem damaged by that void at all, yet flesh would be? Is it just human flesh, or organic matter in general? Just how deep is the depth in there?
But, of course, all that banks on us ever having that opportunity again. I'd not place bets upon it, if I were a betting man... [Alas!! Anyhow.] Still. We do know the captain draws power from our souls and our suffering, somehow. I wonder...if that void isn't the repository to which all that energy goes. It may very well be a glimpse of what the captain's true form is currently...
[....But after a small beat.]
"A black hole?" I'm not sure I'm familiar with what you mean, but I'm assuming you're talking about something beyond the literal definition of those words? [Auldrant's fields of science have had yet to really push very far into more celestial matters beyond the planet...]
A black hole is when gravity is so strong nothing can escape outside. I think it happens when a star collapses or something. Palamedes can probably explain better.
2/2 [ICly after Lumine's info sharing session, just keeping it in one thread]
Took another picture of the captain. It's still distorted even though this time I couldn't see the void. I tried to take a video and the noise was so loud it ruined the speakers.
[Attached: picture of a black smear by the bridge. Oh yeah, Natsuno just knocked on the captain's door hoping he'd answer.]
[Perhaps Palamedes probably could, and it's something Jade may very well bring up with him later. Stars collapsing are decidedly outside Jade's wheelhouse for a fact, but if it's a sort of thing that might even vaguely relate back to the captain's current void status somehow...well, it wouldn't exactly even surprise him at this point. Just about anything seems possible anymore, around here--why not a power derived from dying stars, too?
But anyhow. Such a conversational thread is switched out for this brand new one several days later, assuredly, and--ah.....]
Well! This still aligns, actually...if the void is perpetually present within him, its effects being active even without visibility actually makes plenty enough sense. His very presence seems to continue disagreeing with cameras even as our own eyes remain unbothered, though, it would seem. I wonder if our perception isn't quite aligning with what the cameras detect somehow, or
[Wait. Hold on, though. A small pause, in which the typing icon rises and settles; while the picture might have been enough to sidetrack him initially, some follow-up thoughts are finally surfacing on Jade's end, and. Actually???]
Wait, you attained this image very recently? Where
You didn't try knocking on the bridge door, did you?
[Then, if he can't control it--further evidence pointing to some sort of field of energy all about his general presence, more than likely. Unnoticeable to conventional senses, but apparently very hard on technology? Ah, if he were more of an engineer there would probably be notable implications there...the question does arise if there might be some way they could track that energy all the same, though. Something to at least ascertain the captain's whereabouts at any given time--
Too bad all these rapid-succession thoughts aren't actually making it to text form, though! No, sorry, Jade's still rather stuck on this bit.....]
I do wish you wouldn't write that as if you aren't aware of the crux of the issue already... [Hm---] I would hope you at least paid that visit with full awareness of the fact that the last time the captain actually answered that door, someone ended up losing a hand in the ensuing conversation.
[You know. As far as he's aware, anyway.
...Still, though. As even Jade has to eventually acknowledge--after another delay of some on-and-off typing:] But I take it you're unharmed presently, or you wouldn't be going about sending such casual messages right now. ....Or would you be?
We need information. I know what happened last time and I knew the risk I was taking. [He doesn't bother mentioning he knocked instead of trying to blast the door, and that the captain came out to him instead of opening the door. It doesn't really matter, no when their captor is so capricious.] Better me than someone who can't heal.
I do understand your logic here, I think. Though I must point out, all the same...that if anyone here would know how to truly hurt you regardless of your healing, it would be the captain. I'd hope you were aware of this as well, going in...
[None of them might know the true extent of the captain's knowledge of them, but Jade's fairly confident that it's a discomfiting amount. Friday's utterly casual address of the finer points of his fomicry exploits...Jade has not forgotten this.
But he does also know--he knows--that he's rendering something of a losing argument here, as familiar as he's become with the sort of mindset Natsuno tends to carry around on these matters. Much as he might wish that Natsuno--and any other passenger--please stop visiting the bridge door...well, if this isn't the first time, it probably won't be the last, either. Maybe there's other compelling arguments against it to be made...but it's already mildly difficult enough to field this over text. And despite himself...]
Still, I do appreciate the risk you decided to take, in capturing this footage here. If you were unharmed before and after...I suppose this truly is the best result we could ask for, at this particular occasion. [Hmmm.] This does confirm the captain bears an aura unbearable to fontech, at the very least. [('Technology', he means, semantics of such terms briefly forgotten in his preoccupation with...everything else, here, you know--] I wonder if there might be some way we could utilize this...some means to detect the captain's presence, perhaps, should he actually be in the habit of leaving that bridge outside parties on occasion.
Unfortunately, however, matters of technology are not my own strong suit in the least...I'm not yet entirely sure how to decipher the full mechanics behind the way the captain strains 'cameras' like this. I'm afraid I can only propose these sorts of hypotheses for now.
[The captain put a bomb in his collar for a reason, after all. And Jade is correct to assume there's not point in arguing, because Natsuno will do it anyway. To truly hurt him would mean to kill him, and he doesn't care about that (maybe he should consider there are always OTHER ways to hurt him...)]
Anyway, thanks. Hypotheses help too. Palamedes suggested to find someone who's an expert on photography, so I'll try asking around.
"Every little bit counts" and all that, yes? Small as these bits are indeed...but the greatest sort of breakthroughs do tend to start with very small baselines, at least.
'Photography' has to do with the methods of taking 'pictures', I would assume? A very solid suggestion on Palamedes' part for a fact. I haven't the faintest idea if such a person might already be on this ship, but we do have quite a variety of passengers aboard...I'll keep an ear out too, at least insofar as I can.
[...

And what are your plans for the rest of this day going to be now, I wonder? [read: ARE YOU DOING ANY OTHER REMARKABLY RECKLESS THINGS IN THE NEXT 24 HOURS KIDDO.....are you at least done prank-calling the captain at the bridge for the week!!!]
[Anyway if this shitposting route is really the one Natsuno wants to take here--]
So that's why you've been hoarding those steak knives under your mattress this entire time, is it? My my, I do hope they don't suddenly and mysteriously disappear before you get a chance to come back and pick them up. What a terribly unlucky sort of thing that would be!
Oh dear, and here I've already got one of these knives in my hand! I suppose I'll just have to put it in a much more secure non-mattress sort of place now!
Which is what I would say if I actually did want to go through the trouble of touching your stuff. But not to worry! I'd never dream of truly invading your mattress privacy in such a way ❤ [Yes he absolutely and very deliberately held off on sending the latter half of that message for at least five seconds longer than his usual reply time, as one does in these Wars of Rudeness--] You know, though, you could be stowing them in a better place than a mattress of all things...is there a reason that putting them in a drawer like a normal person didn't suffice, for you?
