FIRST IMPRESSIONSVISUAL Tall and preferably sharply-dressed in sleeved layers and heeled boots, good posture and assured body-language. There tends to be an at least moderately put-together atmosphere about his person at all times, though he often affects an at-ease sort of air in more casual conversation, hands in his coat pockets and a pleasant smile on his face when he's idling. Still, those familiar with such tics might still be able to note the alertness of his bearing and the cut of his typical teal uniform as both being rather military. SOUND I tend to reference his diction in the English dub when writing his voice, but feel free to imagine whichever VA you like! There's also a distinctly melodic background reverb to the type of magic he uses when it's activated; see the magic information section further below for more details! SCENT Nothing terribly notable, pretty average as far as a meticulously hygienic adult human male tends to go; apparently he does like to use some kind of nice cologne on a typical day, though. The vaguely tropical Tommy Bahama souvenir brand in the men's section will have to do.... DEMEANOR Jade always seems to be running at a baseline of disingenuous cheer. It's an attitude that tends to remain constant and fluctuates very little, and so this seemingly unflappable vague amusement of his is often regarded by others as obnoxious or dissonant at worst and enigmatic at best. After all, when he's constantly smiling, it's difficult to tell what he's truly thinking or feeling at any given time. Not helped by this is a nagging sense that he's noticing more things about you than he'll say out loud; those with inexpert lies and poor facades might occasionally find those weak points poked at and idly cajoled about, hinting but rarely actually confronting, as Jade is usually content with just sowing discomfort until you either fess up yourself or become an active detriment to others. Then there's his penchant for bright sarcasm, and a general positively terrible sense of sardonic humor...overall, he can be rather difficult to get along with. But muster the patience, and eventually you might yet catch a glimpse through his carefully composed front sometimes too. There is something more genuine in there, after all, but part of the issue is that Jade often has just as much difficulty accessing it as everyone else... IC PERMISSIONSPHYSICAL CONTACT He'll pretty much never initiate any, but nobody's stopping you! He does like his personal space, though, so casual touching will generally be received rather stiffly and dubiously (if not downright awkwardly), and he unfortunately has all the hugging responsiveness of a wood plank. Good friends will be tolerated and maybe, slightly reciprocated; strangers won't be reciprocated at all, but won't get outright shoved off unless it gets egregious...though they should probably be prepared to get their ears snarked off the whole time they're doing it. FLIRTING / KISSING / MORE? Again, nobody's stopping you! Though he generally seems to have little interest in pursuing such things off the cuff, as professionally as he tends to conduct himself on a general basis. He may respond to flirting in a more sardonic or playful sort of fashion if it's shaping up to be a mutual amusement sort of thing, but anything more blatantly sincere--especially if it gets physical unprompted--will be met with nonplussed surprise at best and a prompt rebuff at worst. Goodness, at least take him out to dinner first, would you? PHYSICAL VIOLENCE If you insist! Though we may want to talk it out and hash an outcome if it's a conflict more extended than a few exchanged blows? Jade has been a career soldier for many years and is no stranger to fighting; while he generally prefers to neutralize hazards from a distance with fonic artes, he's actually not particularly squishy in the usual mage fashion either, and so will not hesitate to throw more direct hands as necessary! He has a decent amount of physical strength, and a spear magically stored in his right arm that he can summon and dismiss on a dime as needed. INJURING / KILLING Am generally quite down for knocking him around a fair amount! I'd like to discuss things beforehand for anything more severe than broken bones, though. Would definitely like to plot out any actual deaths beforehand as well! Though the fact they're impermanent sure makes things a lot more flexible haha, ha...... MENTAL INFORMATION Jade has a very sharp mind, and is regarded as a genius in the field of fonic artes for a reason; in general he's often a lot more perceptive than he lets on, even if he tends to keep various findings to himself instead of voicing them aloud most of the time. While his analytical abilities are plenty robust, though, his perception of his own emotions is, uh...disastrously bad by comparison. He does have feelings, but there's a weirdly muted quality to them most of the time, until concentrated bursts occur under extraordinary circumstances. Of course, all of this is the upper iceberg of his headspace; bracket text is generally free game, but if somebody's wanting to delve deeper for more details, contact me so I can provide! Mindreading isn't a terribly common phenomena where he's from, and so Jade has no mental barriers with which to resist. Should he ever realize it's happening, he probably won't be too happy about it. MAGICAL INFORMATION Jade is referred to as a highly accomplished "fonist" back home. A fonist is a practitioner of fonic artes, which are essentially spells utilizing the power of resonant particles of vibration called "fonons"; gathering certain frequencies of fonons produces results ranging across six different elements. The process of casting involves Jade channeling these fonons through his body's fon slots to manipulate them, rather the same way different sounds might be drawn from an instrument. Though it's a system viewed through a practically scientific lens where Jade's from, it's still essentially a particularly melodic type of magic at the end of the day--other characters are free to parse it as such, and detect that Jade practices it. The attuned might notice, as well, that Jade's unnatural eye-color has been invoked by unnatural means: he applied fonic glyphs directly onto his eyes quite awhile ago, and they're still visible if you get up in his grill enough to examine them. For further details on his abilities as a fonist (and also deets on the weird eye thing maybe), feel free to have a look at the abilities section on his app here! MEDICAL INFORMATION Overall pretty hale and hearty, no immediate illnesses or dire problems. Fit enough to routinely pass military physicals! He's built some moderate lean muscle from spearmanship reps and such, maintained by pretty routine combat training, and so he's normally capable of fielding at least some heavy-lifting or close-up melee if absolutely necessary. He might lament about aching joints and a bad back on account of his ""old age"" around the youths, but please don't believe him. The glasses don't even correct his sight, he already has 20/10 vision in both eyes without them........ But the glasses do serve a purpose as more of a suppressant?! Jade will start to suffer migraines after a few hours without them on, and these symptoms will progressively worsen over time unless some other form of suppressant is applied, as the glyphs in his eyes will start unraveling on their own otherwise. Additionally, though he shares all the physical features and organs of a standard human, Jade's body does possess an additional mechanic in the form of "fon slots": ten slots internal and external, invisible to the naked eye, that promote a fonon flow which sustains major biological processes much the same way a circulatory system might. Fon slots can be found on every existence in his homeworld of Auldrant, including the planet itself; back home, living things cannot survive without them. As he tends to open his own slots quite frequently to cast fonic artes, Jade has an additional slight sensitivity to ambient energies similar in elemental nature to fonons. Direct external manipulation of fon slots in general would also be a very painful thing. OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS Unethical cloning practices...and an overtly casual disregard for artificially-created beings in general, be they doppelgangers or constructs or what have you, should said beings exhibit anything in the way of consciousness and intelligence. Treat these things with anything less than respect in front of him, and you'll be running into a pretty sharp disagreement with Jade in turn. Flagrant resurrection of the dead, or discussion of it as an easy and ideal sort of thing to do, is also liable to get a knee-jerk reaction that's more negative than not. Yes, it sure is ironic, considering his Necromancer title. Yes, he sure does hate everything about the impermanence of death on the Serena Eterna-- OOC PERMISSIONSBACKTAGGING No problem! Down for reaching back up to about a month for in-game threads; past that point, though, we might want to get together and handwave to open the way for new events! THREADHOPPING Dependent on context! If things are in the middle of dumb comedy already you're probably fine (especially if it's just muffled meta commentary in the bg lol). Otherwise, though, please ask me first! FOURTHWALLING Would prefer not to get into anything explicitly about him being a fictional character in a jrpg or anything along those lines, thanks! SHIPPING I'm very open to the idea, if the CR chemistry has potential!! Jade himself is just...difficult, with these things, because feelings are hard and he's a very emotionally limited sort of person. He'll have a hard time finding the pulse on his own interest, if it develops to start with; conversely, he might have an easier time spotting others directing it his way, but what he does with that information is dicey at best, and so one-sided situations are a constant risk. In short: it's gonna take some hassle! But I'm happy to work with other players to angle this into Actually Happening if it's a direction we'd like to go! Gender is no issue ICly or OOCly, m/f or m/m or m/* all fine; ICly adults aged 20+ would be ideal. If you'd like to talk something out, feel free to contact me! DO NOT WANT I'm not great with explicitly graphic descriptions of gore (implied is fine), but otherwise there isn't much else that's an issue. I'll contact you if something comes up! ANYTHING ELSE? - Player timezone is CST - I default to action brackets out of habit, but if you prefer prose just let me know! I'm happy to match - I tend to err towards longer tags even in texting threads, so I'm not great at sustained boomeranging, but will try to keep a steady pace going for the thread with a tag at least every couple days. I also don't mind shorter tags in return at all! Me being long-winded plus Jade just having a Lot happening in his obnoxiously big brain at all times just tends to up the word count on occasion, and the important thing at the end of the day is that the thread keeps moving and stays fun for all parties! Fonology Vol. 1 Contents:
Where fonic artes are concerned, there's mention of how they are facilitated by channeling fonons through the ten fon slots of the human body, including where those fon slots are located (eyes, four for each limb, vocal cords, brain, heart, spine, intestines; eyes are cited as the largest slot on the human body). There's an advisory passage on how aspiring fonists need to be cautious in testing their natural range for channeling fonons: some people just have no natural capacity for fonic artes at all, or can only manage physical combat artes, while even the majority of established fonists are generally only able to specialize in one or two elements at a time, and Seventh fonists are especially rare. Trying to draw on a fonic element outside your natural range can lead to "highly destructive results". Following this are several instructional passages on common "fon verses" for common artes (aka the poetic chant you say before you cast the spell), and how they can be tweaked or devised from scratch to better suit the preferences of the fonist.
Then there's a section dedicated to basic fonic glyph construction, peppered with examples that show how they can range from simple sigils to highly complex blueprints depending on the arte being utilized. There's also apparently a marked difference between "written glyphs" physically placed to do certain things, and "naturally-occurring glyphs" that manifest as circles created by a fonist when casting fonic artes.
As the more astute might begin to notice as they read through this book, fonons and fonic artes seem to tie very closely into aspects of sound, from the talk of elemental frequencies to the musical terminology often used in the text ("verses" in chants, "tuning" in adjusting artes, etc), to how many parts of the glyphs seem almost reminiscent of a staff outline and other symbols in sheet music. Even the fonic script lettering left intact from the ship translator by being contained in the example fonic glyphs look vaguely reminiscent of music notes...
As noted in the inventory list above, though, this book's margins are also positively littered with all kinds of extra notes and corrections penned in by the same steady and precise hand. The frequency of a certain fonic element type is modified to a higher decimal precision here, certain example fonic glyphs have better and more efficient versions redesigned there, and so on so forth...
