CHARACTER
Name: Jade Curtiss
True Name: Jade Balfour
Canon: Tales of the Abyss (Several weeks after Van's defeat on Eldrant)
Age: 35
History: Character-specific page, and a proper overall summary of the canon's storyline here!

Powers/Abilities:
- Fonist: A practitioner of fonic artes, which are essentially shiny spells utilizing the power of resonant particles called "fonons". Much the same way atoms compose some worlds, atoms and fonons compose Jade's world; there are seven types of fonons, each with a spectrum of vibration. Jade is referred to as a highly accomplished fonist in canon, as he can harness all six of the fonons that correspond to a natural element of the planet: darkness, earth, wind, water, fire, and light. The seventh fonon is Sound, which generally promotes healing and some Other Things....but Jade cannot control the seventh, and will adamantly refuse to try to ever again. Anyway--even taking his own self-mods into account (see below), fonic artes still take at least a bit of uninterrupted time, incantation, and stamina to cast; the stronger the arte, the longer the setup, and the greater the taxation on the caster. They're also reliant on Jade actually being able to channel fonons in an area, and while I'll generally assume that fonons still exist in this game's setting, that's always subject to fluctuate proportionately to plot convenience!

- Fonic Sight: Wanting to enhance his ability to cast fonic artes, Jade once etched a pair of fonic glyphs directly onto his own eyes in a bid to amplify his body's fonon intake by three times the normal amount--a modification he would go on to coin as "fonic sight". This essentially adds a permanent power boost to any fonic arte he casts, and means he can expend less effort to generate more power than a normal fonist. It also hurt a lot in application! And turned his eyes a perpetual shade of unnatural red! And you can still see the glyphs on his irises if you get close and squint, so that's fun. Since he was like 8 years old at the time he formulated this, and the modification is very tricky to actually remove without outright blinding oneself, these glyphs are perpetually a bit unstable and prone to unraveling within days without some sort of stabilizer. Jade designed a pair of fontech glasses as a suppressant for this, and wears them to this day; thanks to this, his eyesight's still pretty good! For now! 20/10 vision apparently.

- Personal Storage: A subset of his fonist abilities. Using a phenomenon in Jade's world called a "contamination effect" (where something is broken down into fonic components small enough to disseminate into another mass), Jade invented a method to literally store inanimate objects in his own body! In this way he can summon an object's fonons from himself and instantly reassemble them for use, before just as quickly disassembling them for storage all over again. He's stashing a spear in his right arm currently, for nice surprise combat bonuses, but he could probably stash other things in his body if he wanted to? Like a notebook in a leg, or a teacup in a shoulder, or something. I'm going to assume it probably takes some kind of low-key constant concentration to maintain the state-matter of said objects 24-7 the way he does with his spear, though, so let's say he can only stash one item in himself at a time, and needs some time to set up the method beforehand.

- Father of Fomicry: Another subset of his fonist abilities; Jade is the inventor of fomicry and the leading expert on its replica products. "Fomicry" is a process of cloning with fonons, achieved either by hand with particular fonic artes or by machinery built specifically for the purpose. Fomicry can be used to create near-perfect replicas of just about anything, from toys and mechanical gears to living things--including humans! Though increased complexity generally leads to increased chances of flawed copies, and there is a general trend of living replicas tending to degrade at a far faster rate than originals in various ways over time. (Also it is not a viable method of resurrecting someone from the dead.) Jade is still capable of performing fomicry by hand via fonic arte, so long as there is an original in vicinity to pull the needed information from--but he's very not inclined to doing it on a whim these days, as the thought tends to leave an extremely bad taste in his mouth for. A lot of reasons. So! It's not something he'll generally want to tap into off the bat, but it is a capability he has access to all the same.

- Mad Scientist (Reforming) (But Habitual): In case it hasn't already been getting very obvious from the above...! Jade's in possession of a very sharp mind in general, and is regarded in particular as a genius in the field of fonology by many back home. He was inventing brand new fonic artes before the age of 10, including fomicry at age 9, and his methods only got even more alarmingly sophisticated as he grew older. After accumulating some Very Bad Ethic Experiences and reaching something of a crossroads in his pursuit of refining fomicry, Jade decided to officially slam the brakes on his own scientific endeavors in his early twenties...but even if he's not a career scientist any longer, it's still a mentality he's yet to entirely shake off. Jade is still prone to developing scientific interest in just about anything that doesn't already have a clear-cut answer available, and can be a remarkably quick study even in areas he's never dealt with before. Launching impromptu small-scale tests and experiments on all sorts of sundry things is practically a side-hobby at this point, and acquaintances may not be safe from getting at least somewhat roped into them. (Don't let him cook food for you unless you're ready to be a bit of a guinea pig at some point tbh.....)

- Career Soldier: It should be noted that even if he were completely stripped of all his fonist-related abilities, Jade would still be fully capable of physically defending himself! He may not be quite as fast and hard-hitting as the more combat-oriented members of his jrpg party in canon...but as a long-time member of the Malkuth Imperial Forces, he's still had several years of military combat experience, and is very accustomed to the concept of killing others for the sake of survival. He will not hesitate to run you through with that spear if he must, or at least tap into some moderate hand-to-hand capabilities.

Inventory:
- The Malkuth Imperial Forces uniform on his back
- Fontech glasses (no prescription, stabilizes his fonic sight)
- A spear stored in his right arm
- Two pineapple gels (medicinal gummies)
- A pocket-change quantity of gald (Auldrant's currency)
- A small half-filled notebook and a pen
- Capacity core, "Nocere": a small palm-sized gold disc with a radial design carved into its surface, including the phrase "mischievous" etched in the fonic alphabet. (C. cores are a type of accessory commonly carried by many in Auldrant, and while often worn purely for aesthetic, some provide small perks to one's person; Nocere in particular makes you feel slightly hardier, and eases casting of fonic artes)

Job History:
- Scientist in Malkuth's Imperial Research Institute (age 13 to 22)
  • Initiated part-time as a student attending the Malkuth Imperial Military Academy, transitioning to full-time upon completing his education (acquired a doctorate in fonology, is still referred to as "Dr. Balfour" by those in this circle)
  • Spearheaded research of fomicry, a groundbreaking field of fonology at the time; in exchange for acquiring the resources needed to further the study, applications of fomicry for military use were also devised, ranging from the accelerated production of military equipment to the testing of human replicas as programmable soldiers for war
  • Personal focus was applied to using fomicry as a way of reviving the deceased, utilizing replica data taken from dead soldiers and other sources (such as the data of Hod) for countless tests; this pursuit was ultimately a failure. But rumors about Jade as a "Necromancer" doing weird resurrection science began flying around all the same.
  • Research endeavors were eventually cut short by an abrupt departure from the Research Institute of his own volition, following a near-fatal accident. All further uses of fomicry on living things would also go on to be formally banned per his own request.

  • Responsibilities & skills: Genius-level intelligence & very narrow focus on personal goals at any cost; cooperation and integration of research with military operations; thorough familiarity with human anatomy & general human experimentation; repeatedly glossing over moral boundaries (until punched into finally noticing them); oops! it's all ethics violations; Learning When To Just Stop
- Colonel of the Malkuth Imperial Forces Third Division (age ~25 to present day)
  • Was enlisted as a soldier specializing in fonic artes during the Hod War when he was 19 or 20, but fully transitioned to being a soldier in the Malkuth Imperial Forces full-time after departing from the Research Institute. Proved to be very competent as both a combat-oriented fonist and strategist, and rose through the ranks at an exceptional pace; he presumably acquired rank of Colonel within several years of becoming a soldier, and has maintained this rank since. Allegedly by present-day he's long been qualified to ascend higher still, but declines to do so by personal preference.
  • The first battle he ever took part in was the Battle of Rotelro at some point during the Hod War, where he would personally blind the commander of the opposing forces, one of Kimlasca's best archers at the time; this sort of track record would continue in subsequent battles. Jade's most recent engagement in a military capacity was in the Battle of Chesedonia (a few years before the beginning of the canon storyline), where he apparently played a large part in opposing Kimlascan forces being almost completely annihilated.
  • Thanks to previous engagements and also that particular battle, is now possessed of a full-fledged reputation as "Jade the Necromancer" and is side-eyed by many military affiliates in both countries. Rumors now claim he picks through dead bodies on battlefields and has soldiers with dead men's faces in his ranks.
  • Outside of wartime, Malkuth's military forces function as more general security and peacekeepers within the empire, maintaining law and apprehending criminals and other such things.

  • Responsibilities & skills: Training and hands-on physical combat experience as a footsoldier; mastery of combat-based fonic artes; tactical acumen; issuing commands and guiding combat units; law enforcement; operation of various Malkuth military equipment and vessels, most notably the landship Tartarus; generating a grisly reputation and ultimately Running With It (there's a grain of technical truth to a lot of those rumors, after all.......)
- Security Escort to the Fon Master >> Representative of Malkuth (last several months)
  • Assigned to escort and transport Fon Master Ion from Malkuth to Kimlasca during a time of rising tensions between the two countries. (The Fon Master is essentially the Fantasy Pope of this particular setting. Fon Master Ion was traveling as an envoy of peace, carrying a letter proposing a peace treaty written by the Emperor of Malkuth, to ideally be delivered to the King in Kimlasca.) The journey didn't.....quite go to plan, but the Fon Master and his letter were successfully delivered eventually?!
  • The Fon Master would unfortunately proceed to be repeatedly kidnapped several times (both over the course of this initial voyage and also even afterwards), which Jade was still obligated to at least try to help rectify by virtue of still being part of the Fon Master's escort. This........ultimately didn't pan out well either, but. Look. They all tried so hard ok :(
  • Things get steadily even more out of hand! Starting with Kimlasca's newly-appointed ambassador inadvertently triggering the destruction of a Malkuth territory (Akzeriuth), which promptly destabilized a part of the entire continent, and culminated in an even bigger ball of wax involving the Score and the overall wellbeing of Auldrant in its entirely. By various backflips of fate, Jade is eventually involved in the delicate process of safely lowering the rest of the Outer Lands, and is also roped into stopping the plot of a madman dead set on wiping out the current world and rewriting it with replicas of originals. Ends up functioning as a general representative of Malkuth over the course of all this, since he's basically the Emperor's unofficial right-hand man anyhow, and also just one of the most competent people for the job. (May have developed personal stakes towards the end of it all anyhow.)

  • Responsibilities & skills: Navigating a minefield of politics and diplomacy between two countries constantly on the brink of war; exercising prudence and caution while escorting extremely politically influential figures (beginning with the Fon Master but eventually also including various members of his jrpg party as time goes on); rescue and retrieval of said extremely politically influential figures when they're kidnapped or compromised (varying success, alas); surviving being in an entire city falling into a toxic miasma under the planet's crust (yeah); lowering parts of entire continents atop said toxic miasma on purpose, and familiarizing with the technology to do this with the least loss of life possible, before having to figure out how to also fix the whole overall miasma thing (yeah.....); Just General World-Ending Crisis Management; having to get along with others and work together towards a common goal (and maybe even make sincere friendships?!); personal growth (very unexpected)

Suppressions:
- For as long as he can remember, Jade has had great difficulty with properly accessing his own emotions. There have been countless occasions in the past where he knows that he ought to be feeling more, or even wants to be feeling more! But he's just a terribly cold person most of the time, whose emotions run on a very muted spectrum when compared to the people around him--barring very rare flare-ups that occur in concentrated bursts and never last, quite outside his own volition. In adulthood he's at least become pretty decent at maintaining an outward front that emotes a (mostly) normal human amount, so that he doesn't inadvertently creep out every person he meets? But following many events in his canon that have forced him to reflect upon himself and develop relationships with others, this is an aspect of himself that's started to actively bother Jade more and more. How do you hold yourself properly accountable for both your past actions and your future endeavors without enough of a sense of empathy for a functioning moral compass? If he wants to stop himself from repeating the same horrible mistakes he's already committed...

- Branching off the problem above, Jade has always had especial difficulty with accepting loss. He's not entirely sure he even has the capacity for grief the way one actually should? But various tells in canon and side material seem to indicate that he does experience grief--it's just that he never realizes it's happening, and also has no idea how to process it, as he instead tends to end up funneling it into immensely unhealthy obsessions. Unable to come to terms with the finality of death, he would try to grapple grief like it's a problem he must solve by reversing the cause--as seen in the multiple years he spent trying to resurrect Gelda Nebilim with fomicry--when in reality it's something that needs acceptance and closure in other venues. Jade has started to get slightly better at the "acceptance" part, but figuring out "closure" remains another story altogether. At this particular canonpoint he also now has a new layer of grief to contend with in Luke's sacrifice and apparent death; only a few weeks out and still processing it as he is so far, Luke's situation is something that will continue to hang over Jade's head for quite some time.

- It's the epitome of First World Problems, and Jade's well aware of it, but sometimes he really does find it quite troublesome to be a genius such as he. A mind like a steel trap is a nice thing to have 95% of the time, certainly--but there's also no "Off" switch on this thing, and he does sometimes run into that remaining 5% of time where he'd actually like nothing more than to stop thinking about things for awhile. Coming to conclusions he hates, but knows are inevitable and most likely true, is one such form of these intrusive thoughts. Possibly this plays a part in why he tends to withhold information from others so often in canon; he might claim it's because he wants to be sure, but half the problem is also that he was sure about it months ago already, and may in fact be dragging his heels on dealing with the inevitable fallout of that information coming to light. When it gets especially bad he'll usually turn to an evening drink or several, as he's found that alcohol is one of the few lesser-destructive ways to Quiet That Shit Down in his head for awhile.

- Jade might conduct himself with confidence bordering on smugness on a daily basis, but in truth? He really...doesn't much care for himself as a person, lately. In fact, he's admitted out loud in the past that he'd be tempted to travel back in time and kill himself before he ever invented fomicry, if he could. Fortunately, by this canonpoint Jade's also aware that this would be far too easy an out, a disservice to all the people he's harmed, and would undo the few bits of good fomicry has actually facilitated (like Luke's existence, and the breaking of the Score). So Jade is determined to put in the work needed to deal with himself all the same; he wants to change himself for the better overall, if he can, while pursuing real and concrete ways to at least improve the current plight of living replicas in society. But even then, his determination to change isn't yet quite an acceptance of self per se. Jade would still be hard-put to identify actual redeeming qualities of himself as a person without a hearty bent of sarcasm right now, and this is due to the self-loathing he still carries.

- But while he's not a big fan of himself, Jade is a pretty big fan of those he considers true friends! Even if openly admitting to such a thing to the world at large would be like trying to fight an allergic reaction for him. He might have a harder time putting it to proper words, but the fact remains that he does hold the experiences he's shared with his party throughout the game close to heart; a great deal of his motivation towards self-improvement comes from doing right by them, or learning by their example. For a person whose friend circle was like...one and a half people, maybe, before the events of the game proper? The concept is still a bit of an adjustment, but the sentiment is a sincere one all the same.

Greatest Fear: A repeat of what happened to Professor Nebilim, where his own selfishness and lack of foresight ends up taking the life of someone important to him, or generally irreparably ruins the lives of those that did nothing to deserve it.

Greatest Desire: At this point Jade just...wants to do some good, for a change?? For all his "intellect" and "talent" it sure feels like he's achieved nothing but sorrow and suffering for an unbelievably large number of people so far. So, while he's certain he'll never be able to absolve himself of these things...it would still be nice, to make a wide-spreading impact that's actually of help to others for once. Improving the quality of life for the human replicas still living in Auldrant currently, and elevating them as equivalent citizens of society that ought to be treated like any other human being, is a start that he was gunning for at this canonpoint.

Greatest Regret: Inventing fomicry in the first place, though he's working on coming to terms with its part in ultimately breaking Auldrant free from the doomsday track of the Score. Killing Professor Nebilim with his own carelessness, and then refusing the idea of letting her rest for years afterwards, is a close and more permanent second.
